Tap Class: A Surgeon’s Take on Synovial Fluid

24 Oct 2025
Veterinary Insights Theatre

Synovial fluid provides a vital window into the health of a joint. Understanding its composition, function, and diagnostic value allows veterinarians to better differentiate between degenerative, inflammatory, and infectious joint diseases. This presentation reviews the cellular and molecular composition of synovial fluid, and the practical aspects of synovial fluid collection and analysis. Through clinical examples, attendees will learn how to interpret cytological findings, identify key diagnostic patterns, and apply these results to guide case management.

Learning Objectives:

Interpret Macroscopic and Microscopic Findings:
Evaluate synovial fluid colour, turbidity, viscosity, and cytology to distinguish between normal, degenerative, immune-mediated, and septic arthropathies.

Apply Synovial Fluid Analysis in Clinical Decision-Making:
Integrate cytological data (cell counts and differential percentages) with clinical findings to guide diagnosis, treatment, and when to submit samples for culture or further testing.
