Where tech ends and triage begins: Smarter oncology decisions

24 Oct 2025
Veterinary Insights Theatre
Oncology

In an era saturated with cutting-edge diagnostics, this talk explores the evolving balance between high-tech testing and clinical intuition in veterinary oncology. We'll unpack the promise and limitations of emerging modalities such as tumor sequencing, liquid biopsies, and tracking minimal residual disease. While these tools offer unprecedented insights into cancer biology, they may also invite overreliance—especially when whole-body CT scans are reflexively employed for every case, regardless of context or value.

Through clinical scenarios and evidence-based discussion, this session challenges practitioners to recalibrate decision-making: ensuring technology augments—not replaces—the foundational value of hands-on physical examination. With a critical eye on both innovation and practicality, we'll re-center the conversation on the patient in front of us.

  • Explain the mechanisms and diagnostic utility of advanced testing techniques, including tumor sequencing and liquid biopsy.
  • Evaluate the clinical relevance and limitations of minimal residual disease monitoring in veterinary patients.
  • Recognize the risks of overtesting and potential misapplication of full-body CT in routine cancer workups.
  • Apply a triage-driven mindset to oncology cases, integrating technology judiciously and prioritizing physical examination.
  • Critically assess how to balance innovation with clinical judgment to improve patient outcomes and resource use.
