White spots on the lungs: Decoding canine cancer

25 Oct 2025
Veterinary Insights Theatre
Oncology

Not all white spots on thoracic radiographies are metastases!
we will analyse, review, and discuss various challenging radiographies of suspected cancer, as well as possible differentials. This session will also examine the clinical presentation, prognosis, and therapeutic strategies for primary and metastatic lung tumours in canine patients. While the lung is a frequent site for metastasis, primary pulmonary neoplasms such as adenocarcinoma and histiocytic sarcoma—especially in predisposed breeds—are relatively rare and sometimes incidentally discovered. We'll review common signs, diagnostic workup, and staging approaches, as well as the prognostic factors influencing treatment choices. Particular focus will be given to surgical resection and chemotherapy protocols, highlighting the distinct outcomes for carcinomas versus histiocytic sarcomas.

  • Distinguish between cancer and non-cancerous diseases in the lungs, and identify primary or metastatic lung tumours in dogs.
  • Recognise common clinical signs and diagnostic imaging patterns.
  • Assess key prognostic factors for lung carcinomas and histiocytic sarcomas.
  • Select appropriate treatment strategies, including surgery and chemotherapy regimens, based on tumour type and stage.
